The Poverty and Conservation Learning Group is an international network of more than 100 conservation and development organisations that promotes learning on the linkages between biodiversity conservation and poverty reduction, in order to improve policy and practice. Individuals with an interest in poverty-conservation issues are also welcome to join the group to take advantage of the resources we offer, and to contribute to our work.

The Poverty and Conservation Learning Group (PCLG)

One of the key activities of the Poverty and Conservation Learning Group (PCLG) Secretariat is to collect information on poverty-conservation issues and activities, and collate it for members on the PCLG website.  As well as providing a comprehensive listings of events, conservation organisations and initiatives, we maintain a searchable bibliographic database currently containing over 1800 titles on the links between conservation and poverty.

The PCLG also publishes its own series of discussion papers– usually outputs of research that we have been involved in – and convenes or supports learning events that tackle key issues relevant to PCLG members.

Poverty and Conservation Learning Groups in Uganda and Cameroon

Beside the international network, national PCLG groups have been formed in Uganda and Cameroon. These groups are involved in undertaking national level research activities and advocacy initiatives. Find full details of what they are up to and how to get involved are on the Poverty and Conservation Learning Group website.

Great apes

PCLG members have been working together to explore how great ape conservation can be more effectively linked to poverty alleviation efforts since 2009 – for example through tourism, reducing conflict between humans and wildlife and the management of forest carbon both in Africa and South-East Asia. This work is supported by the Arcus Foundation.
