The Poverty and Conservation Learning Group is an international network of conservation and development organisations that promotes learning on the linkages between biodiversity conservation and poverty reduction to improve policy and practice.
Established in 2005, the Poverty and Conservation Learning Group (PCLG):
- Collects, analyses and disseminates information on poverty-conservation linkages
- Shares the latest research and policy developments in the conservation and development sectors, and
- Provides a forum through which organisations and individuals working on poverty-conservation linkages from a variety of backgrounds can share experiences and lessons learned.
One of the key activities of the PCLG is to produce two newsletters to keep our members up-to-date on the latest poverty and conservation news.
The PCLG News is a quarterly newsletter providing updates on members' news, poverty and conservation in the media, new publications and events and opportunities. The PCLG Journal Digest is a monthly newsletter featuring recently published journal articles and publications related to conservation and poverty. Sign up here to receive your updates.
Related to the Journal Digest, PCLG maintains a comprehensive bibliographic database with more than 2,000 titles related to the linkages between poverty and conservation.
PCLG also publishes its own series of discussion papers and, in the past, PCLG has convened or supported learning events that tackle key issues relevant to PCLG members.
Poverty and Conservation Learning Groups in Uganda, Cameroon and DRC
Beside the international network, national PCLG groups have been formed in Uganda, Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
These groups promote information sharing and foster collaboration between conservation and development organisations in the respective countries. National groups define their own agendas related to conservation and development and are involved in research, communication and advocacy activities.
Great apes
PCLG members have been working together to explore how great ape conservation can be more effectively linked to poverty alleviation efforts. For example, through tourism or through reducing conflict between humans and wildlife. This work has been supported by the Arcus Foundation.
